Hero of the Day – Capt. David Lyon

Today, 02/06/2014, the Ky. General Assembly will be honoring a veteran with ties to Lexington, Ky. Military Missions would like to honor him as well by naming him our Hero of the Day.

Capt. David Lyon, a Peterson Air Force Base airman, was serving a year-long deployment in Kabul, Afghanistan during Dec. 2013. He was killed when a car bomb detonated near his convoy. David had served in the Air Force for five years and was scheduled to return home in Feb. 2014. He volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan early last year, according to the base.

If you search the web you will find many stories about David. He was a former track and field star described as a “gentle giant” and a “warrior and winner”. Many say David was completely selfless and was always willing to share his time and energy on others.

Capt. David Lyon was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Purple Heart and the Air Force Combat Action Medal.

David is survived by his wife, Dana Pounds-Lyon, also a US Air Force Academy graduate deployed in Afghanistan. We want the family to know they continue to remain in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Please take a minute to visit our facebook page and join us in saying THANK YOU to this veteran for giving the ultimate sacrifice for his country. God Bless!
